Scuba Diving
The best scuba diving in Japan is on the remote southern islands. Great for experienced divers, but also able to cater for complete first timers. From coral spawning to hammerheads swarming, there is abundance of colour and life. This picture is a cave dive off of Zamami island.
Hiking
Some islands in Japan jut up out of the sea and make amazing hiking opportunities. There is nothing like hiking up and looking out over land and sea. This picture is taken from Mount Mocchomu on Yakushima, an island with the highest peaks in all of Kyushu!
Camping
A lot of the islands in Japan offer free camping. What more can you ask for than free accommodation?? This is a picture from Niijima or Nii island. It has the best campsite I have ever seen. Right next to a surfing beach, spacious, BBQ gear everywhere, facilities on site, all totally free.
Hot Springs
A lot of islands in Japan have volcanic, healing properties. This picture is of a free onsen in Shikine island. It is known by onsen lovers for it’s internal healing properties and it’s benefits particularly to females. What could be better after a day of scuba diving?
Snorkelling
With coral reefs and marine life so abundant on some Japanese islands, days can be filled with snorkelling and sun bathing. This is a picture of a huge green turtle in the sea off of Akajima or Aka island.
Nature Watching
On the isolated islands off of Japan a lot of species have evolved to be endemic. Take the Amami Island black rabbit or the flying fox of Kuchinoerabu Island. This picture is of a humpback whale breaching off of Tokashiki Island. Not endemic, but impressive none-the-less.
